Tony Stewart began in showbiz early on when he joined the circus at 15, in Scotland. Jimmy Logan, the comedian from the great Scottish Logan family, put Tony on stage when he was 17 years old at the famous Metrapole Theatre in Glasgow and the rest is history.

Tony  did the circuit in the working men’s clubs in Sunderland and was spotted by the singer Issy Bonn who booked him to work with the best ventriloquist act at that time, Ray Allen and his famous doll, Lord Charles. His first Master of Ceremonies gig was for a pop star Engelbert Humperdink on the Isle of Man.

Tony has been the opening act for the stars like Mat Monroe and Sir Cliff Richard and has worked with Dusty Springfield, American star and film actress Jane Russell from ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ and even with Marilyn Monroe. Then in 1972, Tony was invited to work on T.V. as a comedian through the summer season.

Before going to live in South Africa, Tony worked on a British show called ‘The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club’ with Bernard Manning, Collin Crompton and Dianna Dors. After touring with cabaret shows in Australia Tony moved to South Africa and started work at the Crazy Horse Hotels in Durban, Cape Town and Pretoria as the resident comedian. By 1976 he was one of the most popular people in television in South Africa, especially as he worked on the famous show ‘Biltong and Potroast’. When Sol Kerzner, the international hotel magnate, opened the Sun Hotels, Tony was so popular, that he did stand-up shows in every Sun Hotel including the famous Sun City Superbowl six times. Tony shot three films in South Africa, one of which he played the Town Crier with Oliver Reed. They later became firm friends while living in Guernsey.

Tony has toured South Africa and the UK and is considered to be one the godfathers of South African stand-up. He has a classic style of comedy to make ribs hurt and people gasp for breath.

The South African community in the South West was proud to introduce Tony Stewart as their headline act for the Celebrate South Africa Comedy Night at the Cheese and Grain on 11th June 2016.

Don’t miss this genius of hilarity with his amazing blend of British and South African humour.
