CALLUM’S Will
Callum’s Will was created for award winning actor Darren King by multi award winning Play write, Director and Actress Janna Ramos Violante. It was first presented at the I Heart Durban Theatre Festival in 2011 under the direction of Janna Ramos Violante. It went on to play at the Grahamstown National Arts festival as part of its Arena Platform in 2012 and at the Hilton Arts festival in the same year. In 2013 it enjoyed a short run in Durban before touring to Johannesburg.
Now twelve years later Darren King is delighted to be revisiting Callum’s Will under the direction of Durban based Actor/Director Blessing Xaba. Blessing Xaba has revisited the script to bring it up date and more relevant to the times in which we now find ourselves living.
Callum Griffith (an ex Ballet Dancer now confined to a wheel chair after a freak accident) hires Will a Zimbabwean ex pat (played by award winning Johannesburg Actor Tafara Nyatsanza) to run errands for him three times a week. Behind Will’s bad boy persona lies a young man with unsuspected dreams and from the unlikely pairing of these two completely different characters (who under normal circumstances would never have crossed paths) develops a friendship that changes both their lives forever.
The beauty of Janna Ramos Violante’s writing is in the intentional silences between the two players, it lies in the long held pauses and unspoken dialog. This play touches on the internal torment of both its characters and the journey of self-discovery they can only take through there unlikely bond.
This fifty five minute piece (presented without an interval) is a beautifully crafted insight into the human condition and the importance of human connection. It is what makes us real….
