CELEBRATE WITH PLATFORM JAZZ

SUNDAY 1 SEPTEMBER at 2.30 PM

Durban’s popular swing jazz band, Platform Jazz, is 30 years old. And to celebrate this momentous milestone they, along with Friends of Music, will be hosting a gala, party, concert on Sunday 1st September at 2.30 pm at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road. 

Platform Jazz was originally formed by trumpeter Cathy Peacock in 1989 to play for the arrival of the Rovos Rail train in Durban. Since then they have gone on to play at numerous events including festivals, schools, churches, restaurants and theatres including the Playhouse, the Heritage, Rhumbelow and Barnyard. They have also entertained at many weddings, milestone parties, and for corporate and private functions. 

The celebratory birthday concert will see current and past members of the band making music together. There will be a stellar line-up comprising band leader Cathy Peacock on trumpet, Duncan Wooldridge on trombone, Kirsten Sayers and former original member  Ian Holloway on clarinet, Jeff Robinson on flute and sax, Jeff Judge (now resident in the Cape) on sax and vocals, Andreas Kappen on bass, Bruce Baker on kit, Durban's jazz man Melvin Peters on piano with a guest slot by celebrated pianist Christopher Duigan. The singers will be Shelley McLean Downham, Bryan Hiles and Natalie Rungan.

The band will present their most loved and popular pieces and the concert will culminate with all the musicians on stage at the same time.

There will be restaurant style seating so bring your picnic baskets and there will be a cash bar available.
