Durban City Orchestra (DCO), which is independent of KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, started as Durban Philharmonic Orchestra and was later known as Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra before it became DCO, is one of the longest running orchestras in our land and performs at community events in and around KwaZulu-Natal. The community orchestra is made up of active and retired musical teachers, a former orchestral conductor, university musical students and part time musicians who participate voluntarily for the love of music in this community facility, with a complement currently of approximately 30 members. The orchestra includes two accomplished professional musicians in Lykele Temmingh as Resident Conductor and Jitske Brien as Concert Master. Lykele is also the Resident Conductor for KwaZulu-Natal Youth Orchestra and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra where Jitske assists periodically as a violinist. Tony Hind (DCO First Flute) also performed between 1972 and 1974 as conductor when DCO was known as Durban Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra meets weekly for rehearsals throughout the year and welcomes interest from other musicians, so please do not hesitate to chat to Warren Allen (DCO Chairman and Clarinet) for further details.
